Why Strengths Matter More Than You Think

Most of us spend our lives fixing what’s wrong with ourselves. We focus on weaknesses, limitations, and gaps. But here’s what the research shows: identifying and using your natural strengths is one of the most powerful paths to wellbeing and authentic happiness.

Instead of trying to become someone you’re not, you’re working with what’s already there. It’s not arrogant or self-centered—it’s actually how high-performing, fulfilled people think. They’ve discovered what they’re genuinely good at, and they lean into it.

The VIA Character Strengths framework gives you a structured way to do this. Developed by researchers Christopher Peterson and Martin Seligman, it’s backed by decades of research across cultures and demographics. You’ll discover not just what you’re good at, but why certain activities feel effortless while others feel draining.

Understanding the VIA Framework

The VIA Character Strengths model identifies 24 distinct character strengths organized under six broader virtues. These aren’t talents or skills you’ve learned—they’re intrinsic qualities that define how you naturally think, feel, and behave.

Think of virtues as the umbrella and strengths as what sits underneath. For example, the virtue of Wisdom includes strengths like Creativity, Curiosity, and Open-Mindedness. When you score high in these, you’re naturally drawn to understanding how things work and exploring new possibilities.

The Six Virtues

  • Wisdom: Cognitive strengths related to knowledge and learning
  • Courage: Emotional strengths involving will to accomplish goals despite challenges
  • Humanity: Interpersonal strengths about caring for and connecting with others
  • Justice: Civic strengths about fair treatment and community
  • Temperance: Strengths about self-regulation and protection
  • Transcendence: Strengths connecting you to something larger than yourself

Your Signature Strengths Explained

When you take the VIA assessment—there’s a free online version at viacharacter.org—you’ll get a ranked list of all 24 strengths. Your top five are called “signature strengths.” These aren’t just your best qualities. They’re the ones that feel energizing when you use them.

This is the key distinction. A strength is different from a skill. You might be skilled at public speaking because you’ve practiced it for years, but if you’re not high in Social Intelligence or Leadership, doing it constantly might drain you. On the other hand, if you score high in Curiosity or Love of Learning, spending hours researching something you’re interested in doesn’t feel like work—it feels like play.

Signature strengths typically account for about 50% of your overall profile. They’re stable across time—research shows they don’t change dramatically year to year. Most importantly, when you structure your work and life around using these strengths regularly, your wellbeing increases measurably.

How to Take the VIA Assessment

The process is straightforward and takes about 15 minutes. Here’s what to expect:

01

Take the Online Survey

Visit viacharacter.org and complete the free 240-item questionnaire. You’ll rate statements on a scale of how much they apply to you. Don’t overthink your answers—your first instinct is usually your most honest response.

02

Review Your Results

You’ll get a detailed report showing all 24 strengths ranked from highest to lowest. Each strength includes a description of what it means and how it typically shows up in behavior. You’ll see your signature strengths highlighted.

03

Identify Patterns

Look at which virtues your top strengths fall under. You might notice you’re naturally strong in Wisdom and Transcendence but lower in Justice. This pattern tells you something important about your natural wiring.

04

Reflect and Apply

Spend time thinking about how each signature strength shows up in your daily life. Where’re you already using them? What opportunities exist to use them more? This reflection is where real change begins.

Putting Your Strengths Into Action

Understanding your strengths is just the beginning. The real transformation happens when you intentionally structure your life to use them more frequently. Research from the University of Pennsylvania shows that people who use their signature strengths daily report significantly higher life satisfaction and lower depression scores.

If you’re high in Creativity, you might redesign your workspace or find ways to solve problems in unconventional ways. If Leadership is a signature strength, you could volunteer to lead a team project or mentor someone. If Appreciation of Beauty is strong, you might spend time in nature or visit galleries regularly—and yes, this counts as meaningful self-care, not indulgence.

The key is intentionality. You’re not waiting for opportunities to show up. You’re actively looking for situations where your strengths naturally fit. This is how people end up in careers they love, relationships that thrive, and communities where they genuinely contribute.

Your Strengths Are Your Superpower

You don’t need to fix everything about yourself. You don’t need to become someone different. What you need is to understand who you actually are—what energizes you, what comes naturally, what makes you feel alive when you’re doing it.

The VIA Character Strengths framework gives you that clarity. It’s science-based, validated across cultures, and practical. Most importantly, it shifts your mindset from deficit-focused thinking (what’s wrong with me?) to strength-focused thinking (what’s right with me and how can I use it?).

That shift alone changes everything. Your confidence increases. Your decision-making improves. Your relationships become more authentic because you’re showing up as your actual self, not a version you think you should be. And your wellbeing? It genuinely improves when you’re living in alignment with your strengths.

Take the assessment. Spend time with your results. Talk about them with people who know you. Then start building your life around what you’re genuinely good at. That’s not selfish. That’s wisdom.
